yo ask my mother and she’ll tell you I was almost born
in the car we to used live in and her heart was torn
fresh out the hospital we sleeping in the back of the car
makes me wonder how I ever came to get this far
tough times we hard knocks so our days ain’t bright
so stressed I couldn’t even go to sleep at night
remember people telling me I wouldn’t make it in life
my mother crying telling me that we gone be alright
and I grew up without a father and it hurt my soul
every day I’d sit and wonder why he had to go
I contemplate and ask myself what I did to this man
to make him want to leave his son without a helping hand
four kinds a single mother and the road was rough
seem like everything we want to buy cost too much
to anybody that supported know you got my love
very few but if you did then you know who you was

cause I remember getting paid off them welfare checks
remember getting food stamps feeling like we blessed
yes I remember
yes I remember
and I remember living life and it felt so hard
remember feeling like I just got to pray to god
yes I remember
yes I remember

and I remember when my grandpa passed my grandmother followed
my uncle died the same year it was a hard pill to swallow
the kind of pain that I ain’t never even felt before
so sad I wouldn’t nver get to hug them no more
remember when I acted crazy in those LA riots
remember the drive-bys and the moments of silence
remember waking up to find my mother screaming and crying
cause my brother got shot we was scared of him dying
there's no denying that I’ve lived a life of pleasure and pain
steady struggling hoping just hoping that one day things change
and it’s amazing that I even had the will to maintain
went through so many things I wouldn’t want to go through again
the only black kid in school they said I didn’t belong
how could the color of my skin equate to me being wrong
so I've opened up my heart to show you the lengths that I’ve gone
so you can understand the passion and the hurt in this song

cause I remember getting paid off them welfare checks
remember getting food stamps feeling like we blessed
yes I remember
yes I remember
and I remember living life and it felt so hard
remember feeling like I just got to pray to god
yes I remember
yes I remember
